Chapter Eleven
Cade crossed his arms on the top rail of the corral and stared out into the darkness. A coyote howled somewhere in the distance. It was a sad, lonely sound that was answered a moment later. Closer to home, a cow bawled for her calf. A horse stamped its foot. A faint breeze whispered through the leaves of the trees. They were familiar sounds. The sounds of home.
He glanced over his shoulder. His great-grandfatherâs room was dark, but a light burned upstairs in Callieâs window and even as he watched, he saw her silhouette on the shade, imagined her slipping her nightgown over her head, brushing out the silky fall of her hair.
Damn.
âWhat are you planning, old man?â he muttered as he drew his gaze from Callieâs window. Stupid question. He knew very well what the old man had in mind. Jacob figured all he had to do was find a way to put Callie in Cadeâs path often enough and nature would take its course. Well, the old man had sure as hell called that one right, Cade mused sourly. There was no denying the attraction he felt for Callie, or the fact that it was mutual. Sparks flew between them every time they got together. Hell, it was all he could do to keep his hands off her.
He hadnât meant to kiss her tonight but he hadnât been able to help himself. And he was honest enough to admit he wanted more than kisses. A whole hell of a lot more. And Jacob knew it.
Cade looked up at the sky but the stars didnât have any answers either. The best thing he could do was just make himself scarce while she was here. He hadnât spent much time at the home place lately. This would be the perfect time to ride out on the range and take a good look at the land, check the water holes and clear the river of any debris if necessary. Check on the cattle.
If he played his cards right, he could be out of the house before she got up in the morning and stay out until after dark. The best thing to do would be to call in and see if he could pick up a load but he dismissed that idea as soon as it occurred to him. He didnât really think there was anything wrong with Jacob, but he didnât want to take any chances either. If the old man was really sick, then Cade needed to stay close to home.
Callieâs light was still on when he returned to the house. What was she doing up so late, anyway? Going into the kitchen, he poured himself a cup of coffee, then sat down at the table, his legs stretched out in front of him. He heard the faint hum of the washer and dryer and figured she was waiting for her laundry to get done.
He had just poured himself a second cup of coffee when she entered the kitchen.
